REASON PARK

Second INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL on
"REASONing under PARtial Knowledge"

Foligno (Perugia), ITALY
Starting 26th August 2002

Sponsored by REGIONE UMBRIA.
(Lectures, lodging, breakfast, lunch, and a stipend - about 100 EUR - are granted to the participants)

MOTIVATION
In the last decades, the treatment of partial knowledge has seen a great expansion, giving rise to a number of different tools (such as nonmonotonic logic, uncertainty measures, etc.) to perform automated reasoning. The understanding of the basic methods and techniques has undergone the development of a truly interdisciplinary research community and of a parallel debate on the choice of the "best" relevant tools.
AIMS
- to provide young researchers with a basic training in Reasoning under Partial Knowledge and its application in various fields, including Computer Science, Economics, Medicine, Biology, Engineering.
- to stimulate a critical attitude, in particular towards routine application of standard techniques: a particular care will be devoted to singling-out still unsolved puzzling foundational and interpretation problems in this fascinating and rapidly growing field.

The School is organized along three phases (the first and third will be residential: selected candidates will be supportedwith free lectures, lodging, breakfast and lunch, plus a stipend of about 100 EUR), in three different periods:

1st period: three weeks (26th August - 14th September 2002) with courses on the following (tentative) subjects:
· Decision models
· Probabilistic reasoning
· Programming languages for intelligent systems
· Soft computing and application
· Data mining
The participants must choose at least three of them; moreover, a Seminar is offered in which some hot topics will be introduced by chairmen and freely debated.
2nd period: autonomous work at home (with tutoring on line, open chat, …) by groups of 3-4 people, each involved in the preparation of prototypes of intelligent systems for decisions in some specific ambit.
3rd period: a week (to be scheduled) devoted to the presentation and discussion of the projects.
